Waterproof vs Water-Resistant Vinyl Holders
Not all vinyl document holders provide the same level of moisture protection. Understanding the difference between waterproof and water-resistant construction helps ensure your documents remain protected in wet, humid, or washdown environments.
What Does “Water-Resistant” Mean?
Water-resistant holders are designed to help protect documents from light splashes, incidental spills, and general shop or warehouse conditions. Most stitched (sewn) holders fall into this category.
- Helps protect against splashes and surface moisture
- Stitched edge construction
- Open top or partial enclosure
- Suitable for indoor environments with occasional exposure
- Can be wiped clean easily
Because sewn holders use needle stitching along the borders, small perforations exist along the seam. These perforations are outside the main viewing area but prevent the product from being fully sealed. In practical terms, water-resistant holders perform well against incidental moisture but are not intended for sustained water exposure.
What Makes a Holder Waterproof?
Waterproof holders use heat-welded construction to seal the edges of the vinyl without needle perforations. When combined with a secure closure system such as a press-lock seal, the interior pocket can resist water intrusion under normal use conditions.
- Heat-welded seams (no stitch perforations)
- Fully sealed edge construction
- Optional press-lock or zip-style closures
- Designed for wet, washdown, or outdoor exposure
When to Choose Water-Resistant
- Indoor manufacturing environments
- Dry warehouses
- Work orders on carts or racks
- Areas where occasional splashes or spills may occur
When to Choose Waterproof
- Food processing or washdown areas
- Outdoor storage yards
- Marine or coastal environments
- Refrigerated or high-humidity settings
- Rain-exposed equipment or vehicles
Important Clarification
“Waterproof” refers to sealed welded construction combined with a properly closed seal. It does not imply unlimited submersion or pressure-rated performance. Selecting the appropriate construction style, closure type, and mounting method ensures the holder performs as expected in your specific environment.
Choosing the Right Construction
If your environment includes splashes, rain, condensation, or routine cleaning, welded waterproof construction is often the better choice. For controlled indoor environments, stitched water-resistant holders typically provide long service life with greater rigidity and color-coding flexibility.
